Student Organization

Student organizations serve as a platform for students to enhance their capacities by expressing aspirations, initiating positive and creative ideas through various activities that align with the national education goals, as well as the vision and mission of the respective higher education institution.

By participating in student organizations, students can learn how to socialize within their environment and optimize various skills and abilities that cannot be solely acquired in the classroom. The student organizations at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIPOL) of the Universitas Islam Riau (UIR) consist of:

1. Student Executive Board ( BEM)

The first student organization is the Student Executive Board (BEM), commonly abbreviated as BEM. As the name suggests, BEM is responsible for executing various student activities. There are two types of BEM: the university-level BEM, which includes students from various faculties within the university, and the Faculty BEM, consisting of students from a specific faculty.

Becoming a member of BEM means being ready to stay busy, especially in the university-level BEM, as there are numerous planned activities ranging from welcoming new students, academic and non-academic competitions, organizing campus anniversary celebrations, charity walks, music festivals, social activities, study trips, and even advocacy initiatives for students.

BEM also serves as the voice of students, bridging coordination with lecturers and the university's rectorate. In the structure of the national government, the functions of BEM are comparable to the student's parliament (DPR).

2. Student Council (DEMA)

There is an executive body, and there is also its legislative counterpart. The legislative organization at the university level is known as the Student Council (DEMA), which is a higher education-level organization with the main task of monitoring the performance of the executive body, BEM.

Other activities carried out by DEMA, in addition to monitoring, include organizing the succession or election of new Chairpersons and Vice-Chairpersons for BEM, formulating the Main Outline of Work Programs for BEM, drafting regulations and operational standards and procedures for BEM's operations. These regulations and standards are also used as guidelines for evaluations.

3. Departmental or Study Program Student Association

Another type of organization that is always present in universities is the Departmental or Study Program Student Association (Himpunan Mahasiswa Jurusan or Program Studi). As implied by its name, this organization operates at the department or study program level, fostering close-knit relationships among its members. Involvement in the departmental or program student association helps students to develop closer bonds with peers from the same academic cohort, as well as with seniors and juniors.

The Student Associations within the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at the Universitas Islam Riau include:

a. Public Administration Student Association (HIMIA PUBLIK)

b. Business Administration Student Association (HIMIA BISNIS)

c. Political Science Student Association (HIMIP)

d. Criminology Student Association (HIMAKRI)

e. Association of International Relations Student (AIRELS)
